College Savings Programs

We’re excited to share two important programs that support your child’s future education: CalKIDS and Opportunity L.A. These programs provide free, automatic college savings accounts to help families prepare for higher education costs.

 

What is CalKIDS?

CalKIDS is a statewide college savings initiative created by the State of California.

  • Every eligible public school student in grades 1–12 receives a $500 seed deposit in a state-funded savings account.
  • Students who are foster youth or experiencing homelessness may receive additional funds.
  • The savings are held in a 529 college savings plan, which can be used for tuition, books, supplies, and other higher education expenses.

What is Opportunity L.A.?

Opportunity L.A. is the City of Los Angeles’ companion program, offered in partnership with LAUSD and Citibank.

  • Every LAUSD first grader receives a savings account with Citibank, managed by the City of Los Angeles.
  • Families can grow the account through incentives, community programs, and financial education opportunities.

How Do I Access My Child’s Account?

 

For CalKIDS

  1. To check eligibility and access your child’s account, you will need their Statewide Student Identifier (SSID).
  2. Complete this Google Form: Request Your Student’s SSID, or return the paper form that will go home the week of September 15th with your student.
  3. Once we verify, we’ll send your child’s SSID home.
  4. Use the SSID to look up your child’s account on the official CalKIDS website.
For Opportunity L.A.
 
 

Estamos muy emocionados de compartir dos programas importantes que apoyan la futura educación de su hijo: Opportunity L.A. y CalKIDS. Estos programas ofrecen cuentas de ahorro universitarias gratuitas y automáticas para ayudar a las familias a prepararse para los costos de la educación superior, incluyendo matrícula, libros y materiales.

🌆 Opportunity L.A. (Ciudad de Los Ángeles)

  • Todos los estudiantes de primer grado de LAUSD reciben automáticamente una cuenta de ahorros universitarios con Citibank.
  • Las familias reciben la información de la cuenta directamente de Opportunity L.A. y Citibank en la primavera del primer año de primaria del estudiante.

📚 CalKIDS (Estado de California)

  • Cuenta de ahorros automática para todos los estudiantes elegibles en los grados 1–12. Todos los estudiantes aprendices de inglés y los de primer grado de bajos ingresos en 2022 o después son elegibles sin importar ciudadanía o estatus migratorio.
  • Incluye un depósito de $500 del estado.

👉 Para acceder a la cuenta CalKIDS de su hijo/a:

    1. Necesitará su número SSID.
    2. Para obtener el número SSID, escanee el código QR y complete el formulario de Google. Si no puede completar el formulario de Google, devuelva la parte inferior de la carta enviada a casa la semana del 15 de septiembre.
    3. Le enviaremos el número SSID a casa para que pueda verificar la elegibilidad en CalKIDS.org.
